In May 2017 the idea of North Bay PRIDE was born. Only a few short weeks later the city of North Bay raised the PRIDE rainbow flag for the first time. 2500 people took part in North Bay’s first annual PRIDE march and Unity family picnic, which were funded entirely by the Labour Union.
In our second year, 2018, many local sponsors came forward to support a larger slate of events, including a Youth Dance, Drag Runway show and evening cruise on the Chief Commanda. Our PRIDE Committee was very successful in using social media to promote these events. 2018 saw 4000 people at the March and Picnic and 12000 organic views on our North Bay PRIDE Facebook page.
North Bay PRIDE is a committee of volunteers committed to ensuring that the LGBTQ2S+ community of North Bay and surrounding areas is able to be OUT and PROUD. Everyone, whatever their gender or sexual orientation, has the right to feel safe and accepted, to openly be themselves, and to love whomever they love.
While it seems that more people nowadays do accept us in the LGBTQ2S+ community, there is still a lot of work to be done to eliminate discrimination and bullying in schools and the workplace. It is easier for some than others to be “out” publicly in North Bay. The strong need to speak up for the ones who cannot speak for themselves.
North Bay PRIDE has become strong. We have recently incorporated from a grass roots idea less than two years ago. Acceptance and Love is what we are promoting.
Each year we choose a different part of the LGBTQ2S+ community to highlight. 2017 was focused on the Two-Spirit community, 2018 on the Transgender. This year, 2019, our focus is Family
